Imagine the benefits that a VDI environment could realize during a boot storm. All the VMs are based on the same template, and therefore they all have the same set of files during initial boot. Normally, 100 VMs all booting at the same time would require a significant number of HDDs, but with this hyperconverged infrastructure platform, the first VM to boot reads the block off the HDD, which promotes that block into cache. Now the next 99 VMs can all access that same block from cache. That’s a 100:1 IOPS reduction on the IOPS-bound disks.

The momentum of cloud adoption continues to grow for virtualized workloads. This year’s survey showed that 41% of respondents are now running virtual machines (VMs) in the cloud, up from 31% only a year ago. Furthermore, 90% of respondents are currently running, or plan to run, VMs in the cloud in this year, indicating a strong trend towards moving virtual workloads to the cloud. The majority of respondents (59%) plan to leverage AWS for these workloads, with 25% of those planning to use VMware Cloud (VMC) on AWS.

Another must have feature of any modern Availability solution is self-service restore. Self-service restore is essentially a delegation, or granting the task of restoring files within the guest OS to users that have administrative rights. In many organizations, there are users who are responsible for the applications running within the VMs. These application owners are the primary administrators for the files and folders within the VM — so why would they have to go to a backup administrator to simply restore a file? Self-service restore allows these applications owners to log into a portal, search through the content of the backups for their VMs only and perform any necessary restores of those files back to their original or new locations.
