In a survey of over 900 US and UK companies, Trustpilot compiled results from finance companies among the respondents to learn which initiatives they consider most important, what their 2018 priorities are, and whether or not trust plays a role in their business strategy. Trustpilot also conducted a global consumer poll throughout the month of January 2018 on Trustpilot.com to learn more about customers’ expectations when it comes to the finance industry, receiving over 15,000 responses. Those survey results provided a more detailed understanding of whether finance companies’ priorities are aligned with consumer expectations, while also getting a clearer picture of how trust and reputation should be approached. At the end of this report, in addition to the findings, recommendations are provided to finance companies based on the survey findings and analysis.

Among all the trends and buzzwords currently shaking up the marketing industry, one concept is emerging as the one to watch: customer experience (CX). Providing individual customers with the best possible experience is becoming the top priority at the moment, even to the point where experience outshines product quality(!) as the main differentiator. There’s strong evidence organizations are challenged by the opportunities presented by external information sources such as social media, government trend data, and sensor data from the Internet of Things (IoT). No longer content to use internal databases alone, they see big data resources augmented with external information resources as what they need in order to bring about meaningful change. According to a September 2015 global survey of 251 respondents conducted by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, 78 percent of organizations agree or strongly agree that within two years the use of externally generated big data will be “transformational.” But there’s work to be done, since only 21 percent of respondents strongly agree that external data has already had a transformational effect on their firms.

For companies and buyers alike, customer service has traditionally been used as a troubleshooting tool. Forrester found that companies believe that nearly 50% of all buyers still view customer service as a post-purchase resource, rather than a purchasing aid, and in response, companies have positioned their customer service capabilities to match that expectation. However, Forrester conducted a custom survey of 247 companies and found that this reactive, postpurchase-only customer service mindset can result in missed sales opportunities and contributes to greater purchase dissatisfaction.

Ponemon Institute surveyed 569 individuals in IT security who are familiar with credential stuffing and are responsible for the security of their companies’ Internet properties. The survey identified key stats about credential stuffing, including the costs organizations incur to prevent damage, and the financial consequences when attackers succeed. According to respondents, these attacks cause costly application downtime, loss of customers, and involvement of IT security that can result in a cost of millions of dollars. The survey highlights the challenges in identifying who is accessing their websites using stolen credentials, as well as the difficulty in preventing and remediating these attacks.
