Pressure Barrier Replacement of Circulating Water Piping Discharge Headers in Nuclear Power Plants

Decades of continuous service of large diameter pressure pipelines leads to deterioration that threatens the structural integrity of piping systems. Case in point: A Nuclear Power Plant in the southeast U.S. operates boiling water reactors and had minimum wall thickness and leaking occurring after being in service for over 40 years.

Through visual inspection, the utility noticed surface spider web cracking of the steel pipe cement mortar liner caused by ID corrosion. As a result, the utility initiated a pressure barrier repair/replacement project to mitigate the issue which compromised the structural integrity of the pipe. 

This white paper highlights the project background, design options, material selection, CFRP design and CFRP method of installation for repairing 84-inch diameter cement mortar lined steel piping discharge headers.
